Dermopigmentation: Micropigmentation after a failed hair transplant - hide baldness

The term "dermo" comes from the word "dermis" and "pigmentation" comes from "pigment". This term, now considered ideal, was first used a few years ago, when medical professionals entered the scene and combined scientific knowledge with the experience of makeup artists to hide baldness or a failed hair transplant, or to shape the eyebrows.

Dermopigmentation techniques?

There are different methods of dermopigmentation, all of which have their own peculiarities and therefore have different names. For example :

  • Microblading is a procedure performed with a manual insertion device and blades. As with all dermopigmentation procedures, ink is introduced into the skin. Microblading is used in particular for the eyebrows and eyelashes.

  • Micropigmentation, on the other hand, is a procedure best known to be performed using needles attached to the rotary machine, similar to the tattoo machine.

How much does hair micropigmentation cost and how long does it take?

The price of hair micropigmentation varies depending on the area of the scalp to be treated. An average treatment usually costs between $ 500 and $ 1,500, larger treatments cost between $ 1,500 and $ 2,500, and you will need more than one session to get the right result. Prices also vary from country to country; in Turkey, for example, the price is slightly lower.

Micropigmentation is considered semi-permanent. Although the effect can last between 5 and 8 years, the treated area fades over time as the skin exfoliates naturally. Although the color can be lightened, it will only change if the wrong pigment is used. However, if your skin is very dry, discoloration may occur more quickly. As the skin tends to peel when it is dry, this can unintentionally cause the pigment to peel off more quickly.

How does micropigmentation work and who can benefit from it?

The purpose of micropigmentation is not to create hair-like lines like in microblading of the eyebrows, but to recreate the appearance of a shadow on the scalp with tiny dots in different shades of black. This style, called pointillism, is meant to create natural-looking depth and definition. An experienced professional will ensure that the dots resemble a natural hair follicle and blend seamlessly into your skin tone. This procedure is suitable for people who suffer from all forms of hair loss . This includes people who have:

  • Cancer

  • Alopecia

  • Thinning hair

  • Baldness in men and women

Does it hurt ? How does the procedure take place ?

Is this procedure painful? The short answer is: it depends.

Before the procedure, your expert dermographer will locally numb your scalp. However, you should be aware that you may still experience some discomfort. However, the degree of discomfort largely depends on your pain tolerance. People with scalp acne or other sensitive skin conditions like psoriasis should avoid micropigmentation during a rash or flare-up because it is difficult to apply the pigment to the inflamed areas. If you're prone to keloid formation, which is more common on darker skin tone, you may also not be a good candidate for micropigmentation. Once you've done your research and found a responsible and experienced micropigmentation expert, you'll likely have your first consultation. During this consultation, your practitioner will explain to you what to expect and how to prepare.

Here are some general tips:

  • Take a shower before each treatment.

  • Do not wash or wet your scalp for four days after each appointment (this includes excessive sweating).

  • Each treatment typically lasts four to five hours.

  • The number of treatments required depends on the amount of scalp to be treated with micropigmentation. Even though this is only a small area, like the widow's top, three to four treatments are needed to maintain color in the long term, as micropigmentation is a process of layering colors.

  • Treatments are carried out a few weeks apart. In the weeks between treatments, avoid swimming, going to steam rooms or saunas, or taking extremely hot showers.

  • Do not expose your scalp to the sun for the first four days (wearing a hat is sufficient). On the fifth day after treatment, you can expose the treated skin to the sun for an hour, or 45 minutes if you have very fair skin. Remember, however, that less sun exposure on the treated area will have a better long-term effect.

Correcting a failed hair transplant

If you have already had a hair transplant and the result does not meet your expectations and you want to optimize the result, this technique can also satisfy you. It is recommended to correct the donor areas of hair transplants performed with archaic methods, such as FUT, which leaves a long scar behind the skull, or FUE, which promotes white spots on the donor area, or IFA, that you may not be familiar with, robotic systems that implant grafts, like the Artas robot, that leave holes in the donor area due to aggressive harvesting. If your hair transplant has left a "doll hair" effect, micropigmentation is ideal for filling in the gaps between grafts, or you can resort to corrective hair transplantation , this time by professionals.
