Everything you need to know about hair transplant in Turkey: FUE technique

What is hair loss?

Hair loss (alopecia) can affect men and women at any age. It can have many different causes, such as a hereditary predisposition, stress, hormonal imbalances or hyperthyroidism. When our appearance changes, it affects our self-esteem and can cause great distress and emotional problems. That is why many people spend so much time, effort and money on cosmetic and surgical procedures. When you're good about yourself and feeling good, you shine too. Hair transplant is a permanent solution to hair loss which is why it is one of the most popular surgical procedures.

What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure for hair loss. The procedure involves clean transplantation (hair implantation) of natural hair follicles from one part of the body (donor side) into the bald part of the body (recipient side).

There are currently two main methods of hair transplantation: the FUE method (follicular unit extraction) and the FUT method (follicular unit transplantation).

In addition to these traditional methods, Grand Umran Clinic offers its patients a unique advanced technique for hair transplantation: Direct Hair Implantation (DHI). This technique has advantages, but also limitations compared to other methods. DHI hair transplantation is a form of FUE hair transplantation, which is performed using special implantation pins.

Hair transplant methods

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): Hair follicles with multiple roots (1 to 4) are taken from the donor side and transplanted into the bald area of the head, the recipient's side. To harvest the hair, a hair band is taken along with the tissue from the donor side.

This strip is then cut into strands for transplantation. Each harvested graft is then individually transplanted into tiny holes located in the bald area of the scalp, as determined by the surgeon. The transplant is performed under local anesthesia. The recovery time is approximately 2 weeks.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): In this procedure, the donor's hair follicles are extracted one by one and transplanted into the bald areas. Hair transplantation is actually a redistribution of hair. The hair is redistributed from one area to another bald area. Local anesthesia is sufficient for this procedure. The recovery time is variable, it is on average 4 to 5 days. Having your own hair follicles taken directly from the scalp eliminates a potentially painful suturing process. In addition, there is no pain or scarring after the procedure.

The main difference between the two methods presented is that the hair is taken from the donor site. In the FUT hair transplant method, a strip is taken from the donor site and then dissected, while in the FUE method, the patient's hair follicles are taken directly from the scalp on the donor side.

The FUE hair transplant method is a more advanced hair transplantation technique than the FUT method. It offers minimal pain, virtually no scarring and natural looking hair. FUE hair transplantation is mainly used to treat hair loss. Depending on the circumstances and the needs of the patient, the sapphire hair transplant method is also used in special cases to achieve the best results.

Percutaneous 3D Sapphire Technique: In the percutaneous method, small circular canals are opened with very fine needles in place of the side slits. Each hole is exactly the same size and diameter as the hair follicle, which means each hole is very small. The healing time is therefore twice as fast.

Direct hair implantation (DHI): grafts are transferred directly from the donor to the recipient. A special pen, called a Choi pen, is used for this procedure. During DHI treatment, only the donor side is shaved. For this reason, DHI is sometimes referred to as unshaven hair transplant, also known as U-FUE.

Unshaven hair on the donor side can cover the shaved areas, allowing the patient to continue with their daily life as if a hair transplant had never been performed.

Body hair as donor area: If the main donor area is not sufficient, peas can be taken from other areas.

Motorized FUE

The motorized FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method is a type of hair transplant that uses a high-speed electronic tool, the "micromotor". Thanks to this technology, the extraction of hair follicles has become much easier and faster.

How is motorized FUE carried out?

In the motorized FUE method, the surgeon removes the units of hair follicles using an electronic device called a micromotor. Each micromotor is adjustable and can be used for different hair diameters from 0.6 to 0.9mm. The motorized FUE hair transplantation method improves surgeon's performance and increases the success rate of hair transplantation due to the speed of harvesting.

Manual FUE

The manual FUE hair transplant method is performed by hand. The surgeon uses a special cylindrical blade that removes each hair follicle individually from the scalp by manual rotation.

How is the FUE manual executed?

Manual FUE hair transplantation method is performed manually using a special blade. The diameter of this blade can vary between 0.6 and 1.0 mm. The blade is either blunt or sharp.

In FUE hair transplantation, the surgeon does not need an electronic device. Using the blade, the surgeon loosens the hair follicles from the scalp and collects them manually. This operation requires great skill and should only be performed by a professional, otherwise the follicles and scalp will be damaged. Manual FUE generally takes longer than motorized FUE.

What are the differences between motorized and manual FUE?

There is no scientifically proven difference between manual FUE and motorized FUE.

Instructions before operation

All patients should be informed in detail, verbally and in writing, of the instructions before the hair transplant operation. Aspirin, alcohol and drugs should not be taken for 7 days before the operation. Caffeine should also be reduced a few days before.

Instructions after the operation

Our doctors are experts in the field of hair transplantation. They use their experience, knowledge, skills and the latest technology to achieve the best results. It is therefore very important for them that their patients follow the postoperative instructions. Please take note of the following guidelines. These will be explained to you again by your doctor.

1) You should not consume alcohol for up to three days after the hair transplant operation.

2) Aspirin, ibuprofen and other anticoagulant and blood thinner drugs should not be taken until 3 days after hair transplantation.

3) Physical activities such as running, climbing, cycling, etc. should not be performed before 1 month after the hair transplant.
